Disabled Church – Disabled Society $36.95 'Combining poignant personal honesty with an extraordinarily wide range of theological and philosophical learning, John Gillibrand has written a book that takes us well beyond the usual boundaries of studies in autism to raise questions about our human identity, suggesting that we jeopardize human dignity most when we try to bind it to the characteristics we can recognize and value and understand as mirroring only our own faces.'. – from the Foreword by Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury. In this moving and intelligent book John Gillibrand, an Anglican priest, draws on his experience of caring for his non-verbal son, Adam, who has autism and is now a teenager. He reflects on how the experience has changed not just his life, but also his whole way of thinking about theology, politics and philosophy. Illuminated by an account of his day to day experiences with Adam, and deeper reflection upon the meaning of that experience, John Gillibrand considers the challenges that autism – and disability in general – present to the western tradition of thought in theology and philosophy. His experiences lead him to consider the place of people with autism in relation to religion and philosophy, and how the difficulties in providing adequate public services for those with autism and their carers point to a need for radical transformation of western political structures. This thoughtful and incisive book will be of interest to theologians, philosophers and sociologists, as well as to all those trying to integrate people with autism into society. Parents and carers will find much to reflect on. |

Access for Disabled People to Arts Premises: The Journey Sequence $64.99 Illustrating actual building design solutions that have been created to improve accessibility for disabled patrons and performers, the ‘Journey Sequence’ outlines the best examples of design innovation produced in response to new and upcoming legislation. A knowledge of how to design for the disabled can be crucial in winning contracts and having designs accepted. This book shows how the practical implications have already been successfully approached. Covering the whole sequence from parking, to entry, and including details of facilities for the visually and hearing impaired users, advice is given on the methods designers should use in assessing the requirements of disabled people. This is not a publication giving theoretical prescription but rather an illustrated record of achievements in buildings of all sizes where proper access to the disabled has been created. It includes 14 case studies and examples that illustrate the diverse ways that accessibility has been incorporated into arts buildings throughout the UK. This includes Cinemas, Theatres, Concert Halls, Opera Houses, Museums and Libraries. The author team highlights specific design details that are particularly unique, to stimulate the reader and show that creating better accessibility for the disabled both demands and creates innovative design. * Be informed about the latest design solutions for disabled access * Case studies show best practice to inspire your designs * Gain an insight into unique solutions used by designers to make their venues inclusive |

Career Success of Disabled High-flyers $32.95 Career Success of Disabled High-Flyers challenges the assumption that disabled employees are a homogenous group and discusses important questions such as: What is disability? How do people with physical impairments define success? Does gender impact in the same way on disabled and non-disabled people’s careers?. Drawing on in-depth case studies of thirty-one disabled adults who have been successful in their careers, this book suggests that individual traits and patterns of behaviour are key factors in career success, and shows that it is often society rather than impairment that hinders professional progression. Providing role models and valuable insights for young career-minded disabled people, it will also help inform policy and practice in education and training about disability and equality in schools, employment, and society in general. This book is a must-read, not only for people with disabilities, but for teachers, policy-makers, employers and anyone with an interest in disabled people and career development. |
